The Anatomy of Influence is a 20-card collection that track the chain of influence between Peter Paul Rubens and the seven legendary painters (Velázquez, Rembrandt, Watteau, Constable, Delacroix, Renoir, and Picasso) who dissected his work to unlock their own breakthroughs.

On the back of every card, you will find a detailed guide that traces the connection and look at what is happening beneath the paint.

Why Cards Instead of a Book?

This is presented as a set of individual cards rather than a traditional book for a practical reason. Art books are beautiful, but they usually end up closed on a shelf. More importantly, a book makes it incredibly difficult to look at two different paintings at the same time without constantly flipping pages back and forth.

Separate cards give you the freedom to interact with the art differently:

  • Analysis on the back: The back of every card contains a straightforward breakdown of how the painting was composed, the history behind it, and the small details you might miss at first glance.
  • Side-by-side layout: You can physically lay a Rubens card right next to a Rembrandt or a Picasso on your desk, making the direct visual connection between their styles immediately obvious.
  • Flexibility: Because they aren't bound together, you can use them however suits you best. As study flashcards for composition, as visual references next to your workspace, or even framed together on a wall.

About The Artist - Peter Paul Rubens

Peter Paul Rubens
28 June 1577 - 30 May 1640

Born in Germany and raised in Antwerp, Rubens spent his formative years in Italy studying Michelangelo's anatomy and Raphael's composition. By merging these Italian lessons with Northern European realism, he created a signature style defined by rich color and fluid movement.

Shaping the Baroque Era
Rubens became a defining force of the Baroque movement, using grand scale and intense emotion to connect directly with viewers. His dramatic altarpieces championed the Catholic Counter-Reformation by making religious stories accessible to the public, while his work for the royal courts of France, Spain, and England established the Baroque style across Europe.

Style, Technique, and Thematic Range
Known for canvases that seemed to glow from within, Rubens painted thick, luminous lights against thin, dark shadows. He made painted skin look remarkably alive by layering cool tones over warm underlayers, a versatile technique he applied equally to grand mythology, intimate portraits, and raw landscapes.

Diplomatic Career and Legacy
Beyond the studio, Rubens served as a trusted diplomat, negotiating peace treaties for European monarchs. This dual career elevated the social status of the artist from simple craftsman to respected intellectual, leaving behind a structural blueprint that generations of future painters would study.
